The Pagan response to the disaster in Japan has truly been inspiring. Almost immediately after news of the gigantic earthquake, the resulting tsunami, and the nuclear repercussions became known, Pagans all over the U.S. and abroad were sending healing, praying, and donating money to the victims.
Inevitably, the philosophical question of how the gods can let such tragedies happen to innocent people began to emerge. The question has been sensitively explored by Star Foster at Patheos since the day after the tragedy.
The best response to this question I have seen (or rather, heard) comes from Oraia Sphinx on episode 30 her Podcast Media Astra ac Terra. As usual, Oraia’s refelection on the subject is superlatively intelligent and genuinely empathetic. She possesses a unique ability to blend natural science, faith, magick, love, philosophy, and skepticism into a unified whole, distilling a beautiful response to a challenging question.
If you haven’t already, take the time to listen to Oraia’s words – and don’t forget do donate to the Pagan Relief Effort through Doctors Without Borders.
